Electrical Courses Ltd – Adult trainee electrical courses

Man stood in front of a van holding his qualification obtained from Electrical Courses Ltd having become an electrician

We are one of a very small number of Electrical Training providers in the UK, that can offer all the electrical courses and assessments required to go from a complete beginner to a fully Qualified Electrician without having to visit another training or assessment centre. Electrical Courses Ltd is a City & Guilds approved training provider and NET Approved AM2 centre based in Cambridge, which was founded and ran by fully qualified Electricians. We specialise in helping adult trainees to make their first steps in the Electrical Industry by gaining qualifications that are highly recognised by Electrical contracting firms across the UK. Since 2013 we have helped thousands of aspiring electricians to achieve qualifications which enabled them to gain employment in the Electrical industry. We have also trained new and experienced Electricians so that they can gain the more advanced qualifications such as the 18th Edition, EV Charging and Inspection and Testing. In the UK there is an obvious demand for electricians and whilst Apprenticeships fulfil a lot of that demand, it would never be enough without adult trainees also known as Electrical Improvers gaining employment in the industry. Our training provider was first set up because of a lack of training opportunities for anyone aspiring to become an Electrician without going down the four year Apprenticeship route. We have always been very keen on delivering the right type of training and recognisable qualifications that can be seen as a good equivalent to an Apprenticeship and we call this the Electrical Improver Route. What qualifications and assessments are taken during the Electrical Improver Route? There are three main qualifications and one assessment required to be achieved in the Electrical Improver route and these are: How long does it take to train as an adult to become Electrician with Electrical Courses Ltd? On Average it can take up to 2 and a half years to become fully qualified and obtain the ECS Gold Card with our support and training. The first two steps mentioned above which are the Level 2 & 3 Diplomas (2365) are completed in our training centre over two blocks of 8 weeks full time. This can also be done with some training providers and Colleges on evenings or weekends but then the duration would be between 2-3 years.  The level 2 & 3 Diplomas are known as technical qualifications and would teach all the basic underpinning theory and skills an Electrician would use in the workplace. These qualifications would help a new entrée gain employment with a contractor as an Electrical Improver. Once in employment the Electrical Improver can start their final phase of their training by completing the Work Based Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installations (2357) and AM2 3 day assessment. The Level 3 NVQ is a portfolio-based qualification, requiring the Electrical Improver to gather lots of various types of evidence from the work they are completing on the job. The Level 3 NVQ portfolio can take anywhere from 5 months to two years to complete and we run this remotely, meaning that the candidates do not have to attend any lessons in the centre. Towards the end of the level 3 NVQ being completed the Electrical Improver would need to then complete the final 3 day assessment called the AM2. The AM2 is also a requirement of the Level 3 NVQ. Successful completion of the above qualifications and assessments will allow a person to obtain the JIB ECS Gold Card as an Installation Electrician and to be recognised as qualified Electrician in the UK.  What other qualifications do we offer? Whilst we specialise in helping adults become Electricians, we do also offer the other main qualifications and assessments that are required by electricians and these include: If you would like to know more about our courses or to even enquire about becoming an Electrician please contact Electrical Courses Ltd via info@electricalcoursesuk.co.uk, 01223 834062 or check out our social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram. Stevenage College and EV Charging Firm to Bridge Skills Gap

Car being charged with an EV Charging device

North Hertfordshire College (NHC) has recently collaborated with ElectrAssure, specialists in the development and implementation of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging solutions, to establish the very first ElectrAssure Training Academy. The official launch of the ElectrAssure Training Academy will be taking place on Tuesday 16th April at the college’s Stevenage-based Engineering and Construction Campus. Located right next to the well-connected Stevenage Train Station, this site supports the development of future tradespeople, taking current and future industry trends into account. The new ElectrAssure Training Academy at North Hertfordshire College was developed with the industry’s sustainable future in mind and will equip learners with the specific skills and knowledge needed to shape a greener, more sustainable industry. By 2035, all new cars registered in Europe must have zero emissions; EV charging points are essential in supporting the adoption of these sustainable vehicles. As the number of battery-electric cars continues to increase, the need to rapidly expand the EV charging infrastructure is becoming more urgent. With approximately 800 charge points across Hertfordshire and 35,500 nationally, the network needs to expand to 500,000 charge points by 2030. Education institutions across the country will need to equip learners with the relevant skills to successfully meet these requirements. Currently, there’s a shortage of electricians trained in EV charging point installation. Considering the rise in electric vehicle adoption and the need for this type of service – the EV skills gap is becoming more pronounced. After discussions between North Hertfordshire College, ElectrAssure, and other local employers about the current and projected skills gaps within the industry, ideas were developed of how to meet these gaps through new training provisions. ElectrAssure worked closely with North Hertfordshire College to develop the curriculum of this new Training Academy, applying their nine years of experience in delivering bespoke EV charging solutions. Together, they have designed a practical learning opportunity which ensures learners build a broad understanding of EV charging technology, contributing to the closure of the EV skills gap. The Academy will support the delivery of North Hertfordshire College’s new programme, the Level 3 Award in the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installations. The course is a combination of classroom-based theory sessions and workshop sessions that explore the key practical skills. Topics include environmental technology systems, principles of electrical science; electrical installations fault diagnosis and rectification; inspecting, testing, commissioning electrical systems designs; and more. ElectrAssure has also sponsored the installation of charge points at the NHC Engineering and Construction Campus to enable this training delivery. The course is designed for electricians and apprentices to upskill in the EV area. They will learn the fundamentals of EV charging point installation and maintenance – expanding their job role and boosting employability. Kit Davies, Principal and CEO of North Hertfordshire College, said: “This is a great example of how the College is working closely with employers and industry specialists to identify and meet the skills gaps locally and prepare students at the College with the skills required both now and in the future.” Alun Davies, Operations Director of ElectrAssure, said: “We are really pleased to be working with the College on this training academy to provide skills delivery identified and required within the industry. The creation of the ElectrAssure Training Academy enables electricians to access this training locally and supports the development of sustainable technologies and skills required to deliver and support the growing requirement for electrical vehicle charge points locally, regionally, and nationally.” https://www.nhc.ac.uk/study/adult-learner/electrassure-training-academy/ Developing partnerships with sector specialists, such as ElectrAssure, plays an important role in the development of learning at North Hertfordshire College. Ensuring that learners are developing relevant and sector-specific skills that allow them to get a head start in the industry on completion of their course is paramount to the success of each individual learner. The new Academy demonstrates the steps North Hertfordshire College have taken to close the EV skills gap and fully prepare their learners to progress into this modern industry. Viperclip – The Perfect Fit Cable Clip Fastening System

Man using the Viperclip Cable Clip Fasteing System on a wood frame

Designed by a spark for a spark, ViperClip is a unique cable clip fastening system perfect for first fixing and attaching cables to joists and studs. This innovative solution is simple but ticks all the right boxes. With clips sized and shaped perfectly for each cable and a clever fire rated clip in the range, ViperClip is set to be a huge hit with sparkies across the country. So why change from the hammer and clip? ViperClip makes your job faster, easier and safer. Finish the job faster as ViperClips can be fastened every two seconds. No more clips in your mouth with a hammer hanging on the joist whilst you stretch the cable out for clipping. No more thumped thumbs, but you’ll also benefit from reducing repetitive strain and tennis elbow when you’re not swinging that hammer every day! It basically takes a job which needs three hands and means two will do. ViperClip is also a really safe solution with a clip designed for each cable. The unique cable guiding system keeps the cable centred in the clip and the nails on either side of it – not in it! Fire Rated Clips Inventor and electrician, Davy Gray waited a long time for someone to bring out a cable clip which could be fired from a cable clip gun, but it wasn’t until he met his wife that together they embarked on a journey to create that product. The ViperClip range currently includes three sizes of clips in standard and fire rated for 1/1.5mm², 2.5mm² and 4/6mm² twin and earth cables with more shapes and sizes in the pipeline. The ViperClip Fire clip has been tested by BASEC to BS EN 50200:2015 meaning it covers for you for 18th Edition Regulations. This clip is still going strong after 2 hours at over 830°C. Trade Quality Tool As well as creating this unique clip, Davy has also been instrumental in the designs of the clip gun. “What we’ve created is a trade quality product” he said. “It was important to me that we could compete with the big name brands out there, so we bench tested our product against them. I can confidently say ViperClip excelled. You won’t be disappointed! There are plenty more ViperClip products in the pipeline. This range is just the start!” Neat Fit Cable Clip You may remember ViperClip from BBC Dragons’ Den a few years ago securing a lot of interest from the Dragons. Since then the product has evolved, taking on board feedback from trials and changes to the regulations. The clips all have metal nails, meaning they’ll fire into engineered timber as well as natural timber and the gun now has much more punch to make that happen. You can tell an electrician has created this product as it’s those small details that matter – it holds the cable well, but with a hard stop point it doesn’t crush the cable meaning you won’t get called back to the job in 6 months to find out why the install has failed. You’ll have no worries with firing this clip as the gun will guide it over the cable ensuring it’s centred nicely. And what a neat install it is, by using the gun as a spacer, each clip will fire 250mm from the last one. All Clips Made in the UK So if all of that doesn’t tempt you, all ViperClip standard and fire clips are made in the UK. It’s something Davy was keen to do to support UK industry and to ensure availability of the clips. “And when we say, they’re made in the UK we mean we have sourced and assembled the product parts from UK companies. We’re delighted to have worked with Ad-Vance Engineering from my home town of Lisburn, Northern Ireland to make the moulds for our clips, Rugby Plastics in Leicester, Frank Shaw in Gloucester and Clamason Industries in Kingswinford. We’ve also been working with QM Systems in Kidderminster to design and build a machine to assemble our clips. Our designers, BIGsmall Design in Belfast have been with us from the start with our clip designs and RDD+ in York have been shoulder to shoulder with us bringing our clip gun to life. So when I say, our clips are made in the UK – you can see they truly are.” Available at Wholesalers Nationwide Coming to a store near you is the ViperClip Electrician’s Cable Clip Gun pack which includes the 20v gun, two 2aH 20 volt lithium ion batteries, a charger plus a tool lanyard and toolbag. A battery charge is pretty good on this tool lasting over 1000 fires and with two in the pack, you’re well covered for your time on site. The canvas toolbag is handy for those days you only need to take a few bits on pieces to the job with plenty of pockets for your spare clips plus room for those essentials such as drivers and snips. ViperClips are available in trade boxes of 1000 containing 5 individual boxes of 200 – which fit neatly into work trouser pockets. ViperClip has just recently launched with product available through the big names such as City Electrical Factors, Edmundson Electric, Electric Centre, Kew Electric, Toolstation and YESSS Electrical and some of the independents. You can meet the ViperClip team and give the product a try yourself at your local Elex Show. www.viper-clip.com ViperClip, once bitten no going back! For other articles view our features section.

MCCBs fitted with Type B Earth leakage relay

Stand alone Earth Leakend Units - enclosed MCCBs Type B

With the use of integral DC source equipment increasing, Type B Earth Leakage relays provide protection against DC and AC leakage currents. The increased usage of Electric Vehicle Chargers (EVC) highlights the need for DC leakage currents protection. Although Type A Earth Leakage relays and RCDs tolerate upto 6mA DC leakage, they’re not designed to product against DC leakage. Type B devices however, are specifically designed for detection and protection against DC and AC Leakage current.  When multiple EVCs are used, it is very likely the potential DC leakage current will exceed 6mA. Causing a phenomenon in Type A devices known as “blinding’ resulting with the either working erratically or not at all. Aswell as EVCs producing DC Leakage current, most of the equipment with some form of variable control will also have the potential for DC leakage currents.  Type B devices are designed to protect against DC leakage currents and provide “future proofing” for installations. It is inevitable that potential DC leakage currents will increase, particularly with the installation of EVCs. Fitting Type B Earth Leakage devices provides the correct protection and prevents the need for future costly shut downs to allow for upgrading of Type A devices.
