5 expert tips electricians need to know on how to handle a business crisis

electrician stood by wires - expert tips for electricians on how to handle business crises

Recent research has shown over a quarter of tradespeople are searching for second jobs, meaning spending money on PR and marketing for many UK electricians is very difficult. With electricians potentially facing issues at some point which could prove to be a PR nightmare, issues such as wiring causing serious harm to a client. How these incidents are handled by electricians could make or break their reputations as a business, especially if they are in the early stages of developing their career. With budgets tight, to help, the experts at money.co.uk business insurance have offered their tips on minimising the risk of a PR crisis and dealing with one effectively: Electricians have the potential to cause serious damage to a customer’s home if they make a mistake when wiring and create a fire hazard. A legal claim of this kind has the potential to close down a business in this sector. To avoid this:  How to handle a PR crisis:  Remove the risk As soon as you’re made aware of an issue, if possible, you should remove the risk element. This could mean removing a post from the business’ social media page if it’s caused a legal issue, or stopping selling a certain product or offering a certain service if it’s putting customers at risk. Acting fast means there’s less risk of the issue escalating by being seen by more people or causing more harm and complaints.  Communicate with the customer If the incident relates to a customer, engaging with that disgruntled customer quickly and empathetically can go a long way in resolving the situation and stop it from spiralling into a bigger issue. Showing genuine compassion, offering an apology, and explaining how you plan to rectify the situation, can help to rebuild your relationship with the customer and protect your business’ reputation as one that cares about its customers.  Prepare a statement If the incident is already public knowledge (for example, due to a poor online review) or you have a duty of care to make it public knowledge (such as if other customers could be at risk), then you’ll need to prepare a statement. Posting a statement on your brand’s website or social media pages can allow you to address the issue – as well as any public backlash – head-on. Showing transparency and commitment to rectifying the situation can help to build trust in your business and prevent alienating customers.  Talk to your insurer  If the crisis has the potential to escalate to legal proceedings, you’ll want to speak to your business insurance provider and check the terms of your policy. You may need to claim on your insurance to cover legal costs, be it a legal infringement or being sued by a customer. Your insurer can advise you on how to handle the process and obtain the necessary funds without risking your business’s financial standing. Take the learnings After making it through a crisis and the fall-out, you’ll no doubt want to move on and forget it happened. But one of the most important parts of crisis management is taking learnings from these incidents to avoid the same thing happening again, or to deal with it faster and more effectively next time. Make sure to keep a log of any incidents and the learnings, and update your crisis management strategy accordingly You can find these insights, a comment from money.co.uk’s business insurance expert

Ensuring power in a digital world – Fast and accurate measurements with enhanced load bank technology.

Digiload quad core 1.5GHz Processor - Load Banks power generator testing and validation by Power Prove

A vital tool for power generator testing and validation is Load Banks, however, efficient testing is becoming a challenge due to ageing equipment. with industrial infrastructure being modernised, what can be done to ensure load bank technology doesn’t get left behind? Andrew Keith, director of load bank manufacturer Power Prove, tells us how advancements in load bank technology are making testing both easier and quicker than ever. Reliable power availability is becoming increasingly significant, with the move towards a digital mindset and increasing dependence on technology, meaning load banks are playing a critical role in the power management puzzle, providing safe and rigorous generator testing, whilst finding the best load bank setup to match business needs can present a challenge. Load bank problems  Conventional load banks can leave a lot to be desired. Older technologies often lack the required precision, leading to poor quality measurements. Resulting inaccuracies in test scores can make it harder to spot problems proactively for timely maintenance. This has a knock-on effect to the generator’s reliability, and for critical applications like hospitals or air traffic control, the consequences can be severe.  Traditional load banks will typically require manual operation. For remote or hazardous environments, such as an offshore generator or a building rooftop, these access challenges can make regular monitoring and maintenance more challenging. It’s likely that these systems will be checked less frequently than those in more easy-to-reach locations, and so problems are likely to go unchecked until it’s too late.  And the increasing connectivity of industry poses another problem. Continued implementation of connected technologies means that manufacturers are starting to reap the benefits, enjoying better visibility over operations and actionable insights to boost productivity. But as we become more and more connected, there’s a risk of older legacy equipment — including the humble load bank — being left behind.  Load bank solution It’s clear that load bank technology needs a boost if it’s to tackle all these problems. Here, Power Prove aims to do just that with Digiload. This is a complete load bank control system. Thanks to its quad core 1.5 GHz processor, Digiload is one of the most powerful control systems on the market. Capable of sampling up to 6,400 times per second, Digiload provides an extensive view of generator performance to make predictive maintenance much easier. And real-time data visibility means testing and decision-making can be faster than ever.  There are three user control options. Local operation is possible through the touchscreen IPS display. A rugged remote-control option is available for work at a slight distance, and for fully remote operation, Digiload can also operate over an Ethernet or cellular connection. Choice of control means a flexible solution no matter the location.  Digiload can be easily configured with your own custom load step sequences for quick and easy repetitive testing. There’s no limit to the number of sequences saved, meaning that presets can be configured for just about any device that will require frequent testing. This feature is particularly advantageous for portable load banks in avoiding long set-up times.  And Digiload can also help support businesses still in the process of transferring over to Industry 4.0. Test data is automatically downloaded into a suitable format for easy integration within existing data storage and processing systems. This smooth data collection process allows for quicker and easier data analysis, rapidly cutting test times with no compromise on measurement quality.  As our world increasingly shifts to the digital, demand for reliable power will only continue to increase. Load bank technology will play a future role in the ongoing picture of power management, but investing in the right technology is key for a futureproofed, reliable testing system that truly meets the needs of your business.  Fast and accurate measurements with enhanced load bank technology. Changes to undertaking fire system work

BAFE Fire Safety Celebrating 40 years

Dr Justin Maltby-Smith CEng FIET CMgr FCMI, former electrician/electrical contractor, NICEIC Head of Schemes and Operations, NAPIT Technical Scheme Development Manager, and current Group Managing Director for the BAFE Fire Safety Register, discusses fire safety work within the electrical industry. For many years, there has been a potential misunderstanding about electricians and their abilities to work on wider life safety systems. Electricians are skilled people, but with this skill, knowledge, and experience comes the appropriate behaviours to clearly understand the limitations of their abilities. For example, commercial fire detection and alarm systems should be fully compliant with BS 5839-1, not just BS 7671 (and additional normative references). This work activity is not usually covered under the major electrical schemes available and, with further developments within the fire safety industry, the “Responsible Person” is becoming more aware of this fact.  The appointed “Responsible Person” has a duty to ensure their fire safety systems are suitable and maintained appropriately for their building. New legislation came into effect late last year to strengthen this obligation, with Section 156 of the Building Safety Act 2022 making amendments to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. This better defined responsibility highlighting that appropriate record keeping of fire safety information is required for the building’s lifespan (including recording the external installers/service providers that were employed to help them fulfil their obligations).  This information is important to the electrical contracting industry as fire safety requirements are a far higher priority than ever before. Due diligence must be evidenced by the “Responsible Person” and therefore the choice of contractors shall be required to meet their increased competency specifications such as holding appropriate UKAS Accredited Third-Party Certification to work on fire (and wider life safety) systems.   Alongside the well-established fire detection and alarm system competency schemes available on the market, there are also additional electrotechnical related specialisms that Third-Party Certification can be achieved in, these include emergency lighting systems, and evacuation alert systems. Evacuation alert systems have had a dedicated British Standard (BS 8629) since 2019 which covers their design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance. It is imperative that all fire and life safety systems are suitable and are provided by competent installers who are working to the required British Standards/Codes of Practice. These specialist areas of expertise can be evidenced appropriately via Third-Party Certification (awarded by a UKAS Accredited Certification Body that is licensed by BAFE).  The BAFE competency Schemes available for the electrotechnical sector are as follows: Further information is available on the BAFE Fire Safey Register website at www.bafe.org.uk  Other stories

Skills, drills and bellyaches: Electricians give their honest opinion in SELECT podcast

Seasoned electricians share their views on various topics in the latest episode of the industry podcast, recorded at the Toolbox Talk live event at Hampden. Five experienced electricians have given a highly insightful look at the industry with episode five of the highly regarded podcast Sparks’ Remarks from SELECT, Scotland’s biggest trade association. Contractors give their views on topics ranging the ongoing challenge of recruitment, the promising future for battery storage, and photovoltaic (PC ) Installations in the podcast Skills, drills and bellyaches – live from Hampden Spark!  The podcast which was recorded at SELECT’s Toolbox Talk event at Hampden Park on 23rd May, saw contractors sharing their candid opinions on regulation of the profession, cashflow and even which biscuits are offered to them on jobs. One talking point for the electricians was regarding the skills shortage, with Mark Higgins of Edinburgh-based C~urb telling the podcast: “It’s disheartening to hear young people say they don’t want to go into trades because they can get £15 an hour in McDonald’s. Many also say they have relatives who’ve worked in the trade and have dodgy knees and bad backs and they don’t want that.” Gavin Ross, Commercial Director at Prime Electrical Group in Cumbernauld, also gave his views, revealing: “We find recruitment of apprentices fairly easy but with qualified electricians it’s difficult to recruit the right person for the right job. A lot of our work is in residential new build housing, so getting the operatives able to work in that environment or transferring them from commercial to residential or vice versa is challenge.” And Kevin Griffin, former SELECT President and owner of Ayrshire-based Logic Systems Fire and Security Ltd, agreed, adding: “Post-COVID, a lot of people have retired so there’s been a gap in skilled people and skills shortages all over. And that’s definitely going to be an issue going forward.” Renewables was also a topic for discussion, with Alan Watt, owner of Glasgow-based Alltech Electrical Systems claiming that PV and battery storage is “a game changer”. Alan told the podcast: “We’ve been working hard to move into the solar PV side as many of our customers have been hit by the cost of living and want to save money on their energy bills. Although grants are pretty non-existent, solar PV and battery storage has reignited people’s imagination and we’re doing a lot of installs now. Battery storage is the real game changer because it means you can store your energy and use it when you want.” Sole trader, Jim Mackie of Select Electrician in Glasgow, agreed, adding: “Over the next five years, I think installing solar PV will see exciting growth and it’s something I’m going to get myself involved in, although I plan to go for the maintenance side. Getting older, I don’t want to be crawling about in a roof – I’d prefer to be just fixing inverters and fault finding.” As always, the topic of regulation was never far from delegates’ lips at Toolbox Talks, with SELECT members expressing their ongoing support for the association’s long-running campaign for protection of title for the profession of electrician. Kevin said: “It’s a ridiculous situation and hard to believe that it hasn’t gained traction with the government. Most people think that someone has to have some sort of certification before they can walk in your door and tamper with your electrics. In the gas sector they have Gas Safe Register so why not something in a similar vein for the electrical trade? There’s no logic to it and we must certainly keep chipping away at it.” And cashflow was also a topic of conversation, with Jim revealing: “You’re always chasing your tail and paying out for the next job while waiting for payment from another – it’s a chase all the time.” Along with the serious topics, the five contractors were also quizzed on their biscuit of choice on a job, with most opting for a classic Tunnock’s treat. Kevin said: “The caramel wafer or tea cake is ideal – as long as you don’t eat the whole box.” And although they may have had differing views on some issues, all those interviewed were in agreement on one thing – their enthusiasm for the industry and SELECT Toolbox Talks. Mark said: “I’ve been in the trade since I left school at 17 and I’m 47 now. I love my trade and want to keep carrying the flag – it’s like a badge you wear or your football top. I really like keeping people safe and we need to encourage that attitude and spread the word.” Jim added: “I’ve been coming to the Toolbox Talks events for about four or five years, and find them really informative. I also attend SELECT branch meetings as much as I can because, being a sole trader, you stay informed about any important technical updates.” Gavin agreed, adding: “Toolbox Talks are great for networking and to get a catch up on technical information. It means I can go back to the office and cascade it to the rest of the workforce, which is very important.” The latest instalment of Sparks’ Remarks follows hot on the heels of the first four episodes, which featured the views of apprentices at various stages of their training across Scotland. April 2023’s launch episode, The good, the bad and the fallopian tube windups, was followed by More than wires and pliers: My first year as an apprentice in July, then Five-way tag teams, the proud father and a kick up the bahookie in November. The fourth episode Telling a lock nut from a hazel nut, was released in April 2024. All have been hosted by journalist Kim McAllister, who said: “For this latest episode, it was great to meet such a wide variety of contractors and hear their contrasting views on such a broad number of topics. “Although they all had different viewpoints, it was also clear that they all had one thing in common – they are all

NICEIC celebrating talented females within the electrical industry on International Women in Engineering Day

Lisa Burge NICEIC Area Engineer named Student of the Year whilst studying for her electrical qualification. A success story for International Women in Engineering Day

The leading certification body for the electrical industry NICEIC, is celebrating talented females in the electrical sector on International Women in Engineering Day (23rd June) Led by the Women’s Engineering Society, the awareness day, shines a light on the successes of female engineers worldwide, intending to empower others to an engineering career. With only 16.5% of engineers in the UK being female*, there is a need to encourage more women to consider careers within STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and Mathematics) sectors. Sharing female role model success stories within the engineering industry is therefore, one of the most powerful ways to promote the benefits and opportunities available to those within the sector. One such story is that of NICEIC Area Engineer, Lisa Burge. Lisa, who was named Student of the Year whilst studying for her electrical qualification, was on the lookout for a career that would challenge her and allow her to invest in her skillset. She says: “My friend told me that he was training to become an electrician. After some self-doubt, I was encouraged to go for it. It ended up being the best advice I ever followed.” Following a successful career as an electrician, Lisa joined NICEIC in the role of Area Engineer. This role involves her assessing the competence of electrical contractors and gives her the opportunity to drive industry standards, something she is passionate about. A career in the electrotechnical industry can provide a wealth of benefits including progression opportunities, particularly in renewable and sustainable technologies, as well as excellent salaries. Lisa encourages women to consider pursuing a career in the industry that she has thrived in, saying, “I’m so pleased that I decided to pursue a career as an electrician. I have learned so much and enjoy the variety of work immensely. I would really encourage anyone thinking of entering the industry to do so. There are so many opportunities and possibilities within the sector, there’s never been a better time to join!” NICEIC Head of Standards, Dani Putney, adds: “Success stories like Lisa’s need to be shared with all aspiring female engineers as we try to break down the barriers to women entering the electrical industry. We recognise that there is still more to be done but International Women in Engineering Day offers a key opportunity to highlight the success of women in the industry, as well as presenting the benefits available to those who decide on pursuing a career in the sector.” For more information, visit: * inwed.org.uk/about/
