New research reveals growing appeal of Apprenticeships among next generation of workers

BAE Systems - Apprenticeship Week, group of Apprentices

As one of the UK’s largest apprenticeship providers, BAE Systems has tested the latest attitudes towards career paths among young people to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week (10-16 February). The findings are part of a newly launched Apprenticeship Barometer, which surveyed 2,000 young people (16-24 year olds) across the country to identify views on education, training and pathways to career success. Main attractions The survey revealed a growing interest in apprenticeships, with more than 70% of respondents willing to relocate to a different part of the UK to seize an apprenticeship opportunity and 6 in 10 preferring it as an alternative to university. The findings highlight a significant shift toward flexibility and apprenticeships being increasingly recognised as a pathway to secure and rewarding careers, with respondents citing job security (28%), high starting salaries (28%) and hands-on training (23%) as the most appealing features. An overwhelming 86% of respondents agreed that apprenticeships enhance social mobility, offering significant potential to support disadvantaged groups and provide alternatives to traditional higher education routes. Barriers to access Despite their appeal, responses suggest barriers such as limited opportunities (35%) and lack of information (32%) continue to hinder access to apprenticeships, highlighting the need for greater awareness and more accessible pathways. Nearly half (44%) of the young people surveyed said they felt uninformed about apprenticeship opportunities in their field of interest and almost 9 in 10 (89%) believed employers should expand apprenticeship programmes alongside graduate schemes to meet rising demand. STEM leads the way Industries linked to careers in science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) led the way in apprenticeship preferences, with 1 in 4 (26%) of the young people surveyed expressing interest. They also ranked in the top three careers that respondents associated with the greatest job security. Money matters More than half (54%) of respondents identified earning while learning as the main reason for choosing an apprenticeship over university, while 36% cited avoiding student debt as a key motivator, reflecting a perceived growing financial awareness. Richard Hamer, HR Director of Education and Skills at BAE Systems, said:“The Apprenticeship Barometer gives a real insight into the aspirations and values of the next generation of the UK workforce. It’s clear there’s a huge appetite for high quality vocational training that provides a clear career pathway, whilst offering financial security. “I’d encourage anyone interested in apprenticeships to have a look at the thousands of highly valuable opportunities available across the country.” BAE Systems is recruiting for more than 2,400 new apprentice, undergraduate and graduate roles in 2025, which will result in around 6,500 in training, making up approximately 15% of its UK workforce.Baroness Jacqui Smith, Minister for Skills, Department for Education, said:“Apprenticeships are central to this government’s Plan for Change — they break down barriers to opportunity and equip people of all ages and backgrounds with the skills they need to go on to rewarding careers. They also drive growth by giving businesses the workforce they need in key sectors of the economy. “It’s great to see BAE Systems, one of our Top 100 apprentice employers, backing this mission by recruiting more than 2,400 new apprentices, undergraduates, and graduates in 2025. Their commitment demonstrates the real impact apprenticeships can have—helping young people gain hands-on training, access secure and well-paid careers, and power key industries like STEM.” The closing date for apprentice applications is 28 February 2025. There are multiple graduate intakes throughout the year, including January, April, July, August and September. Find out more and apply: baesystems.com/earycareers

SELECT releases safety video about neutral current diversion as part of 125th anniversary

SELECT releases new in-depth safety video about neutral current diversion as it continues to spearhead awareness campaign as part of 125th anniversary.

SELECT releases new in-depth safety video about neutral current diversion as it continues to spearhead awareness campaign as part of 125th anniversary. Scotland’s largest construction trade association, SELECT, has continued its awareness campaign on the issue of neutral current diversion (NCD) by releasing an in-depth guidance video to help keep electricians and their customers safe. Produced in partnership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Safety Checks for Neutral Current Diversion delivers a step-by-step guide to the potential dangers of NCD, how to test for it and how to deal with it if discovered. The 20-minute resource is now available to view on the SELECT YouTube channel and is the latest step in the trade body’s campaign to raise awareness of the issue as it celebrates its 125th anniversary as the world’s oldest electrical trade association. Bob Cairney, Director of Technical Services at SELECT, said: “NCD constitutes an unknown risk that has huge safety implications, so we are keen to equip electrical contractors with the necessary knowledge to identify it and take action where necessary. “This video is designed to give an easy-to-follow overview of the issue, combined with practical steps to dealing with it safely and swiftly. “We are grateful to the IET for their assistance in making this resource and hope it will be shared widely to help raise awareness further throughout the industry.” Presented by Steven Devine and Darren Sweeney, the video explains how NCD occurs when protective measures fail and current is diverted via exposed metal fixings such as gas, water and oil pipes. Identified as a particular issue in multiple occupancy buildings, the duo explain how this can lead to a build-up of heat that could result in fire or explosion. Steven and Darren then demonstrate a range of tests for NCD, highlighting the many factors that contractors should be aware of, before the video ends with an animated testing walkthrough, adapted from SELECT’s original flowchart. Mr Cairney added: “As well as our colleagues at the IET, we would also like to thank all the other senior figures from across the industry who have contributed feedback and technical insights during the video’s creation. “As Scotland’s largest construction trade body, we are committed to the safety of electricians and their customers and will continue to lead the way with further resources and information to raise awareness about the issue of NCD.” The video follows a suite of practical NCD resources produced by SELECT for members, apprentices and trainees, including posters for workshops and training centres, a digital flowchart and a pocket-sized foldout designed to be kept in toolboxes. NCD was also one of the key topics at the association’s Toolbox Talks in 2024, with briefings delivered to hundreds of contractors across Scotland. The activity also inspired West Lothian College lecturers Thomas Barlow and Scott Cavanagh to devise and build their own interactive fault board that gives young learners the chance to learn how to test for NCD. “New year, new me” say 9 in 10 UK van drivers

Caddy Cargo Van Driver Health Kick

86% of UK van drivers have resolved to make healthier choices in 2025, prioritising better eating habits, more regular exercise and taking steps to improve their mental health, according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ latest study.1 In 2024, the lunch of choice for on-the-go UK van drivers was homemade sandwiches, snacks and wraps (56%), followed by fast-food options (42%), shop-bought meal-deals (39%), microwaveable meals (31%), and instant noodles or pasta (26%).1 However, of the 1,000 UK van drivers surveyed in the annual study, 65% intend to make healthier food choices in the coming year.1 More than half (52%) of the van drivers admitted to not getting enough exercise, falling short of the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week.1 As part of their new year health kick, 57% of van drivers are therefore looking to incorporate more exercise into their weekly routine.1 An increase in weekly working hours (2024 versus 2023) was reported by 61% of respondents, making it harder for UK van drivers to prioritise getting more regular exercise and taking steps to improve their mental health.1 This resulted in 63% of van drivers feeling overwhelmed by work every month – a sharp increase compared to 51% the year before2 – with one quarter (28%) citing a poor work-life balance as a key source of stress.1 In 2025, 38% of UK van drivers are seeking to prioritise a better work-life balance1 to improve their mental health. Craig Cavanagh, National Fleet Manager and Mental Health First Aider at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “Prioritising health and fitness can be a real challenge, particularly when you’re on-the-go or working long hours, so it’s great to see so many van drivers making this a priority for the year ahead. We’re all aware of the positive impact that a healthy diet can have on our mood and mental wellbeing, and with an alarming number of van drivers concerned about work-life balance and looking to prioritise better mental health, these efforts are even more essential to help van drivers stay in good physical and mental shape.” 1Results are taken from a OnePoll survey of 1,000 UK van drivers, conducted in December 2024, covering 2024 calendar year, commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. 2Results are taken from a OnePoll survey of 1,000 UK van drivers, conducted in December 2023, covering 2023 calendar year, commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Trade body SELECT retains UKAS  accreditation for 26th year

Trade body SELECT starts 125th celebrations
in style as it retains prestigious UKAS
accreditation for 26th year running

Trade body SELECT starts 125th celebrations in style as it retains prestigious UKAS  accreditation for 26th year running. World’s oldest electrical trade association once again secures official recognition for its renowned technical inspection service. As SELECT begins celebrating its 125th anniversary year, its Technical team is also celebrating after its inspection activities received accreditation with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for the 26th year in a row. Accreditation against the internationally recognised standard for inspection bodies ISO/IEC 17020:2012 means SELECT continues to be officially recognised for the quality of its electrical installation inspection service. In order for accreditation to be maintained, SELECT has been subject to rigorous annual assessment by UKAS since first attaining accredited status in 1998. Bob Cairney, Director of Technical Services, said: “Being UKAS accredited is extremely important to the association, its members and the wider public, so I would like to congratulate all the Technical Services team on the hard work that has resulted in yet again achieving a successful outcome from our UKAS audit at the end of 2024. “Holding UKAS accredited status is another example of our commitment to quality in our 125th year and brings great confidence to consumers and the wider industry.  “It also demonstrates that our Technical Advisers have proved their competence to carry out installation inspections safely, impartially and to the highest standard.” The latest UKAS accreditation comes as SELECT embarks on a year of activity to mark its 125th year anniversary, including Toolbox Talks across Scotland in May and June and a Grand Ball in Glasgow in November.  The assessment was once again coordinated by SELECT Technical Administrator Susie Liddle, who took on the duties of quality controller at The Walled Garden in 2022. Bob said: “Susie has worked hard and should be rightfully proud of this achievement. I would also like to thank our independent adviser, Haig Hamilton, for his continued assistance.” UKAS is the only national accreditation body in the UK that is recognised by the government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services. Accreditation provides assurance of the consistency and quality of the inspections performed by competent organisations and consequently gives the consumer greater confidence in the safety of their environment.

Trade Association SELECT events to celebrate its 125th anniversary year.

SELECT Events 2025 - Alan Wilson

Trade Association SELECT looks forward to 2025 and plans a packed programme of events to celebrate its 125th anniversary year. From Toolbox Talks to a Grand Anniversary Ball, the calendaris filling up for the world’s oldest electrical trade body After another year of impressive achievement, SELECT is now looking forward to marking its 125th anniversary in style in 2025 as it celebrates its founding as the world’s oldest electrical trade association. The country’s largest construction trade body is planning a packed calendar of events to mark its landmark year, reflecting the way it has represented the profession since 1900 when leading contractors got together in Glasgow to serve the “modern trades”. Generously supported by sponsorship from Associate Members and wholesalers – including some of the industry’s biggest names – SELECT will celebrate the auspicious occasion with a varied programme, ranging from technical talks to a grand ball. Alan Wilson, SELECT Managing Director, said: “The vision of the original founders of the association – that contractors should draw together and unite – is as relevant and as powerful a message today as it was 125 years ago. “Our forefathers understood that rivalry between firms, although keen, ‘did not obscure mutual respect’, and the way that member firms have pulled together in recent years – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic – has been nothing short of remarkable. “The events of this anniversary year will serve to highlight the comprehensive way that SELECT carries out its responsibility to further the aims and ambitions of a profession which is so vital to the future as we transition to a net zero society.” Among the highlights of the year will be the association’s ever-popular Toolbox Talks, sponsored for the first time by Aico, which will once again visit 12 venues across Scotland in May and June, delivering essential technical updates. Also on the calendar will be the President’s Cup golf contest in July, sponsored by Luceco Group, Branch Updates in March and October sponsored by Aico and Hispec and the Past Presidents’ Christmas Lunch in December, sponsored by Electrium. SELECT will also play host to a delegation from EuropeOn, the voice of the continent’s electrical contracting industry, in Edinburgh in May, and host its fourth Professionals’ Day at the V&A Dundee in September. The celebrations will culminate with a glittering 125th Anniversary Grand Ball, sponsored by Scolmore Group, at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow on 14 November, where office bearers, members, staff and industry colleagues will toast SELECT’s ongoing success. Other sponsors for the year’s events include, CEF, Edmundson Electrical, Holland House Electrical, Morton Fraser MacRoberts and Schneider Electric, with Daikin, Dimplex, Megger and National Ventilation also offering support. Mr Wilson, added: “Our teams have been putting in the hours to make sure that the 125th anniversary year will be one to remember, and many more events are in the planning. “In everything we do, we want to show how SELECT has been serving the electrical sector in Scotland through unprecedented changes in society, through times of need and times of prosperity, and will continue to represent the interests of everyone in our profession.”
